H&P would still need to produce equivalent source code. gpsoft is not
asking for $25K for ideas. It's for source code that H&P would otherwise
have to write for themselves. There would still be work to be done to
integrate things properly with the AmigaOS code, but that's still less
work than if they tried to provide the same features by themselves.

No, that $25K in US dollars would be a fair price for source code which
would otherwise have to be written from scratch. It's not all that much
when you think about it -- maybe a modest salary for one programmer for a
year.

The $25K is not to fund the development of their PC Windows
venture. They're *releasing* that product in a few weeks from the sound
of it, and they'll probably get a lot more than $25K from sales in the PC
market.

The $25K is to ensure the continued (Amiga) development of one of the best
pieces of software ever released for the Amiga. It's a fair price, the
problem is that the Amiga market is mostly a charity market nowadays. By
participating in it, most people are being charitable, rather than
reasonably expecting to even recover their costs.

Having said that, I don't think H&P could possibly sell enough of AmigaOS
4.0 to justify the purchase. A TAO-based AmigaOS might be a different
matter. Who knows?

Tyler.
